STANDARD 2 of 5

Standard 2 of 5 (developed in 1960s) is a low-density, variable-length numeric symbology. The symbology is called "2 of 5" due to the fact that digits are encoded with 5 bars, 2 of which are always wide (generally 3 times as wide as narrow bar) and the remaining three are narrow. The spaces in the barcode exist only to separate the bars themselves. The exact size of the spaces is not critical, but is generally the same width as a narrow bar.

Applications
Primarily used in the photo finishing, airline ticketing, and warehouse sorting industries.

Benefits
Standard 2 of 5 is a very simple symbology to implement.

Limitations
It is a numeric only symbology, hence cannot be used for encoding alpha-numetic data. The symbology encodes information only in the width of the bars, and hence takes more space than symbologies that encode information in the width of both bars and spaces, such as interleaved 2 of 5.

Technical Specifications
Standard 2 of 5 is a low-density numeric symbology. The spaces in the barcode exist only to separate the bars themselves. The exact size of the spaces is not critical, but is generally the same width as a narrow bar. The structure of a standard 2 of 5 barcode is really simple: a start character, followed by the data characters, and a stop character.

Additional Information
A more efficient implement of Standard 2 of 5 is the newer Interleaved 2 of 5.

Solutions
One can use Label Flow™ barcode software for printing Standard 2 of 5 barcode labels or use Asset Track (inventory management software) for managing inventory.
